TabTally helps groups split shared expenses. It has no user accounts and no sign-up. By default everything you enter stays on your device, and the app works fully offline. Online sync is optional and off unless you turn it on for a specific group. This page explains what data the app handles and what leaves your device.
Group names, the names you give people in a group, expense descriptions, amounts, currencies, dates, and settlements are stored in a local database on your device. The names you type are labels you choose — TabTally does not ask for, collect, or verify anyone's real identity, email address, phone number, or contacts.
If you uninstall the app or clear its storage from your device settings, local data for groups that were never synced is deleted permanently. We have no copy of it and no way to recover it.
You can enable sync for a group so several people can add expenses to the same group from different devices. This is opt-in per group. Groups you never share stay entirely on your device and are never uploaded.
When you enable sync for a group:
Firebase processes this data on our behalf as a hosting and sync provider. See the Firebase Privacy and Security information and the Google Privacy Policy.
If you record an expense in a currency other than the group's own, the app fetches published exchange rates from a third-party rates service and caches them on your device so conversion keeps working offline. These requests ask only for rates — no expense data, amounts, names, or group contents are sent. As with any web request, the rates provider will see your device's IP address.
TabTally uses Firebase Crashlytics and Firebase Analytics to find crashes and understand which features get used. This collects app-level information such as crash reports and stack traces, device model and operating system version, and general events like "a group was created" or "an export was generated". These events record that an action happened, not the contents — no expense descriptions, amounts, or people's names are included.
PDF and Excel summaries are generated on your device. Where the file goes afterwards is entirely up to you — the app does not upload exports anywhere.
You can stop syncing a group at any time, which keeps your local copy. To have a synced group's data removed from our Firebase project, contact us at the address below with the group's join code and we will delete it.
TabTally is a general-audience utility and is not directed at children under 13. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children. If you believe a child has provided us with information, please contact us so we can address it.
We may update this policy, for example if the app's features or third-party services change. The "last updated" date above reflects the most recent revision.
