Privacy policy — TabTally

NL-003 · last updated August 2, 2026

TabTally helps groups split shared expenses. It has no user accounts and no sign-up. By default everything you enter stays on your device, and the app works fully offline. Online sync is optional and off unless you turn it on for a specific group. This page explains what data the app handles and what leaves your device.

Data you enter

Group names, the names you give people in a group, expense descriptions, amounts, currencies, dates, and settlements are stored in a local database on your device. The names you type are labels you choose — TabTally does not ask for, collect, or verify anyone's real identity, email address, phone number, or contacts.

If you uninstall the app or clear its storage from your device settings, local data for groups that were never synced is deleted permanently. We have no copy of it and no way to recover it.

Optional online sync

You can enable sync for a group so several people can add expenses to the same group from different devices. This is opt-in per group. Groups you never share stay entirely on your device and are never uploaded.

When you enable sync for a group:

  • That group's contents — its name, the member names, expenses, amounts and settlements — are stored on Google Firebase (Cloud Firestore) so other devices in the group can read them.
  • The app signs in to Firebase anonymously. This creates a random identifier for your app install. It is not linked to a Google account, an email address, or you personally, and it is not used to build a profile.
  • Sharing works by a join code or link. Anyone who has that code can join the group and see and edit its contents, so only share it with people you intend to split costs with. Treat the link like the group itself.
  • A random device identifier is stored alongside each change, so edits made on different devices can be merged correctly.

Firebase processes this data on our behalf as a hosting and sync provider. See the Firebase Privacy and Security information and the Google Privacy Policy.

Currency exchange rates

If you record an expense in a currency other than the group's own, the app fetches published exchange rates from a third-party rates service and caches them on your device so conversion keeps working offline. These requests ask only for rates — no expense data, amounts, names, or group contents are sent. As with any web request, the rates provider will see your device's IP address.

Diagnostics and analytics

TabTally uses Firebase Crashlytics and Firebase Analytics to find crashes and understand which features get used. This collects app-level information such as crash reports and stack traces, device model and operating system version, and general events like "a group was created" or "an export was generated". These events record that an action happened, not the contents — no expense descriptions, amounts, or people's names are included.

What TabTally never does

  • No accounts, passwords, or email addresses
  • No access to your contacts, photos, camera, or location
  • No advertising and no advertising identifiers
  • No selling or sharing of your data with third parties for marketing
  • No bank or payment connections — recording that someone paid you is just a note in the app, not a real transfer

Exports

PDF and Excel summaries are generated on your device. Where the file goes afterwards is entirely up to you — the app does not upload exports anywhere.

Deleting synced data

You can stop syncing a group at any time, which keeps your local copy. To have a synced group's data removed from our Firebase project, contact us at the address below with the group's join code and we will delete it.

Children's privacy

TabTally is a general-audience utility and is not directed at children under 13. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children. If you believe a child has provided us with information, please contact us so we can address it.

Changes to this policy

We may update this policy, for example if the app's features or third-party services change. The "last updated" date above reflects the most recent revision.
